The provincial government unveiled plans to update Alberta’s licence plate, and launched a survey giving final say on the design of the new plate to Albertans.

The province unveiled the changed design that includes Alberta’s new logo, and replaces the slogan ‘Wild Rose Country’ with the provincial government’s website alberta.ca.

“Our current licence plate is more than 30 years old and lacks features to help make our roads safer,” Service Alberta Minister Doug Griffiths said. “This new plate will make it easier for police to spot vehicles that are unregistered, uninsured, or stolen.”

In addition, the province has proposed three new designs for the plates, and has launched an online survey to choose the final design. The survey runs from July 8 to August 19.

“These three designs are all inspired by the pride Albertans have in their home,” Premier Dave Hancock said. “The natural beauty of our province is on display in all three designs.”

The new licence plate will be available starting in the spring of 2015 – and will cost five dollars more to help cover the costs of production and implementation, the province said.

The province said drivers can get a new plate from their registry agent when they renew their registration when they complete their annual renewal, or they will be able to buy the new plate before their annual renewal, for a fee.
