Two suspects are in custody after they shot a man and a woman and then shot at police in northeast Edmonton Saturday evening, Edmonton Police Service said.

Northeast Division patrol officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 432 Brintnell Blvd. at around 9 p.m.

Upon arrival, police located a man and a woman, both in their mid-thirties, with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a residential building.

A man who tried to help the victims said the woman was running back and forth in the parking lot screaming.

“She said ‘we just got out of our vehicle and the two of them got out of their van … they both had guns in their hands and just started shooting,’’ Terry Morrison said.

They were taken to the hospital, and EPS said the man’s injuries are serious, while the woman’s are considered to be non-life-threatening.

Witnesses told police they saw two men leave the scene in an older model minivan, EPS said.

Shortly after, officers located a minivan in the area of 130 Avenue and 70 Street, and when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the suspects refused to stop and shot at police.

The officers did not sustain any injuries.

A woman witnessed the suspects in the minivan drive erratically during their chase with the police.

“They ran straight across the side of the road and pretty much just about hit us,” Jennifer Richards said.

Two men left the minivan at 130 Avenue and 86 Street and fled the area on foot, EPS said. Police located the suspects in a nearby field, arrested them, and found two firearms within close proximity.

A nearby resident recalled enjoying a regular evening out in his backyard when he noticed a loud police presence in the neighborhood.

“I was sitting in my backyard just enjoying the evening and I could hear police sirens going,” Lionel Lockwood said. “All of a sudden I hear a cop holler, ‘get down, get down, get down’.”

The two suspects are aged 27 and 21, and they face a number of charges including attempted murder for shooting at police, EPS said.

Police now also believe that there may have been more suspects in the minivan and are urging anyone who saw the vehicle or witnesses with information on any of the three crime scenes to contact EPS at 780-423-4567.
