Two teens who were with a 17-year-old male the night he was shot dead by police are now facing charges. Cyrus Green was fatally wounded by an Edmonton officer in the early morning hours of February 4th in the area of 118th Avenue between the north and southbound portions of Wayne Gretzky Drive.

Around 11 p.m., police say they received the first report of a personal robbery at the Coliseum Transit Station on 118 Avenue. Three males allegedly approached an unknown male at the transit terminal demanding cash and other property. Police report the complainant was then threatened with a knife, but managed to escape the scene unharmed.

Following that, police say the same three youths approached two teenage girls and an unknown male at the terminal. After being asked for a cigarette, one of the girls was then allegedly held at knife-point and the accused demanded some of the girls' belongings.

The three suspects then approached the male in the group, who took out bear spray. And that led to a fight between the complainant and one of the suspects, who police say was carrying a bat.

All three complainants managed to escape unharmed and reported the incident to a bus driver, who then called police.

A third incident occurred where the three suspects walked up to a male and female waiting for a bus, and allegedly demanded money and other property. The male complainant tried to escape but was knocked to the ground and suffered a slash wound to his face, which required stitches.

At that point, officers had made their way to the scene. The three suspects fled on foot, but police managed to arrest two of the youths, and one was shot by an officer.

The incident is now subject to an investigation led by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

ASIRT director Clif Purvis has said initial reports indicate the teenager was charging at police before he was shot three times.

ASIRT had recovered a knife and bat that were involved in the incident.

Investigators said the suspect fled from police and during the pursuit, approached a uniformed officer while in possession of a knife and bat.

The family of Cyrus Green spoke candidly to CTV News earlier in the month criticizing the police's action.

"I don't think they should have resulted to shooting him three times, I just thought maybe one time he would have just dropped everything you know," said Green's sister Anita. "But three times... that's way too late by the time they look at him he's dead already."

The Edmonton Police Association is on record as calling this shooting justified.

Police say they have determined that alcohol was a factor in the three incidents.

A 16-year-old male is facing up to five counts of robbery charges and has been charged with breach of recognizance and probation. He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb.25th.

A 17-year-old male is also facing up to five counts of robbery charges and has been charged with breach of probation. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 2nd.

ASIRT reviews all cases of injuries or deaths that involve police, and will work to determine if the actions of the officer were justified.
