Police have charged a woman with second-degree murder after her husband died early Monday morning.

An autopsy performed Monday showed Teck Hwang, 56, died in and Edmonton hospital of blunt drastic trauma.

“The autopsy results revealed yesterday, confirmed that Mr. Hwang was beaten severely, which only hours later cost him his life,” said EPS Homicide Staff Sgt. Bill Clark Tuesday.

His wife, Nyuk Hwang, 52, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Police were called to the Hwang’s house in the area of 84 Street and 160 Avenue at about 10 p.m. Sunday.

Officers said Teck was in cardiac arrest when they arrived. He was rushed to hospital where he died Monday.

Homicide investigators are calling the case a result of domestic violence. They added domestic violence calls continue to increase in the city.

“Domestic violence impacts families, neighbourhoods and communities across our nation. I can’t encourage the public enough to get involved and contact police immediately, if they have information about a domestic violence situation. They might just save a life,” said Clark.

Nyuk is no stranger to the justice system; she was convicted of assault causing bodily harm in 2009 and was sentenced to three weeks in jail with probation for two years.

Her first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.

This is the second spousal homicide of 2013. In July, Jimmy Rivas-Magana allegedly stabbed his wife, 26-year-old Yeny Alfaro.
