A woman was struck by a snow clearing machine, late Wednesday afternoon, while she was trying to cross a street in north Edmonton.

City police say they got the call about a pedestrian being hit marked crosswalk on 113-A Street and 134 Avenue around 5:10pm. First responders found a 39-year-old victim at the scene and police say she was sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The snow removal machine was heading eastbound on the Avenue and making a turn to the south when the woman was struck. The 53-year-old driver was not injured.

The EPS Major Collisions unit is now investigating the incident. No charges have been laid.

The City is also investigating.

“We’re still reviewing the incident itself, what happened, and reviewing the equipment involved in the incident and then working with police on the investigation,” City of Edmonton spokesperson Cheryl Oxford said.

“The legal department has been advised but it’s too early to speculate.”

Oxford said the 53-year-old male driver had 20 years of experience, and was distraught over the incident – at last word, he was off work, and was being offered counselling.

Police say neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the collision.
