RCMP have charged a woman in her 50s, after the burned remains of a small dog were found in the fire pit of a northern Alberta campground.

Police said officers were called to the Nitehawk Recreational Area campground near Grovedale on July 7 after 11:30 a.m., on reports of animals being mistreated.

When police arrived, they found the remains of a small dog and kennel burning in the fire pit of a campsite – officers arrested a woman who was inside the trailer on the campsite.

Investigators believe the woman was drunk at the time of arrest – and before the incident, she had been arguing with her partner, before her partner left the area.

Witnesses said another dog might have been injured in the incident, but the animal had fled the campsite into a wooded area.

Officers tried to search for the injured animal, but could not find it. From witness reports, it’s believed its injuries were so severe; it didn’t survive.

Grande Prairie RCMP have charged Debra Holden, 53, of Fort St. John, BC with two counts of injuring or endangering animals, and two counts of causing animals unnecessary suffering.

Holden has been released from custody, but is under numerous conditions, including not owning or possessing dogs.

The accused has been scheduled to appear in the Grande Prairie Provincial Court in September.
