A young boy was taken to hospital Saturday, after the north Edmonton apartment suite he was in filled with smoke.
Fire crews were called to an apartment complex in the area of 90 Street and 144 Avenue Saturday afternoon before 1 p.m.
Investigators determined a pot on a stove was the cause of smoke that filled one of the suites in the apartment.
“A pot was left on the stove and it ignited. There was no actual fire damage, it was just smoke,” said fire investigator Kevin Bureau.
The caretaker of the building rescued a seven-year-old boy who was alone in the suite at the time.
“I heard the smoke detectors going off in the suite and they weren’t being shut off so I knocked on the door. There was no answer. I heard a little cough. I knocked again, no answer, so I walked in because I have the keys to each suite,” Kipling Manor caretaker Cherie tells CTV News.
“He was in there coughing, so I grabbed him out. I couldn't even breathe in there.”
The boy had been on the phone with 911 when Cherie found him.
After she brought the boy outside of the building, he was checked by emergency crews and then taken to the Stollery Children’s Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Bureau said the boy was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.
