Police in Red Deer said a youth is facing charges, after he took a photo of a friend holding an airsoft rifle and posted it online Sunday, alongside a warning that students shouldn’t go to school the next day.

RCMP said the post made it to about 300 students through social media just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and was shared by more and more people.

The alleged threat targeted Hunting Hills High School, and was reported to RCMP. Police identified the individuals involved, and determined the individual in the picture did not know his photo had been shared along with the threat, and the weapon is an airsoft rifle, not a firearm.

RCMP determined there wasn’t an actual threat.

The 16-year-old male will face a criminal charge of false information (intent to alarm). His name cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
