Red Deer police have laid charges against a 17-year-old, for a number of sexual assaults that allegedly took place over the last few years.

RCMP said the incidents would have taken place in central Alberta between 2011 and 2015 – against both male and female youth victims.

It’s believed some of the incidents took place while the youths were on Scouts Canada or Cadets Canada trips – RCMP said the youth participated with Scouts Canada between 2007 and 2012, and with Cadets Canada between 2011 and 2015.

The investigation started in May, 2015, after one of the victims filed a complaint. Investigators worked on the file for eight weeks, and identified four additional victims.

Officials said the accused is facing a total of nine charges: five counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual assault with a weapon, indecent act and sexual interference.

The youth has been released on recognizance, and is expected to appear in a Red Deer courtroom on July 9.

RCMP are still investigating.
