A wildfire that was burning out of control near the hamlet of Zama City in northwest Alberta has now been held, the province says.

Zama City residents who were evacuated as a result of the wildfire will be allowed back to their homes Friday morning as Mackenzie County is lifting the evacuation order for Zama at 8 a.m. Friday. The smoke advisory issued by Alberta Health Services for the area remains in effect.

Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development said they do not expect the fire to grow past containment boundaries thanks to current weather conditions and efforts by firefighters.

Zama City is located about 930 kilometres northwest of Edmotnon.
