Two people are dead and six others injured after a highway crash in northwestern Alberta.

Grande Prairie RCMP were called to Highway 43 near Bezanson, Alta. after a crash between a small car and a pick-up truck just after noon on Wednesday.

Police say two people died at the scene while six others were injured and taken to hospital.

One person was transported to a Grande Prairie area hospital by STARS air ambulance.

Five other people were taken to the same hospital by ground ambulance.

Initial reports suggest the car travelling southbound was crossing Highway 43 from Secondary Highway 733 to Secondary Highway 670 when it was struck by an eastbound pick-up truck travelling along Highway 43.

A traffic analyst has been called in to help investigate the cause of the collision.

Eastbound traffic on Highway 43 is being diverted until the investigation is completed.

Bezanson is located near Grande Prairie, about 424 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
