EDMONTON -- Two people are dead after a vehicle hit a moose on Highway 881 north of Edmonton early Thursday morning.

According to RCMP, the driver and one passenger were killed in the collision just after 12:30 a.m.

The man driving the vehicle and the woman in the seat behind the driver died at the scene. Two other passengers, a man sitting in the front passenger seat and a boy in the seat behind him, suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital. They have since been released.  

A section of Highway 881 was closed for several hours and reopened at 11:30 a.m. Thursday morning. 

Police said the names of the people involved will not be released.
