Ward One

Profile:

Ward One is a mix of mature and new neighbourhoods with everything from industrial areas to lakes. West Edmonton Mall is in the Ward along with the Meadowlark Health Centre. Some schools in the Ward include Ross Shepard, Westglen and Winterburn.

Population: 64,547
Eligible voters: 50,424
Neighbourhoods: 53
Councillor: Linda Sloan (since 2004)

Key Issues:

There are two main issues in this Ward. The first is infrastructure. The fire halls and EMS stations in west Edmonton are closer to the east side of the Ward and therefore response times to the west side are high. The second issue is the possibility of the LRT expanding to the area. While it could benefit the Ward, it could also run into issues because of the older neighbourhoods possibly in the way of the line.

Watch: Ward 1 Candidates

One of the Edmonton council seats without an incumbent candidate in this election is Ward 1, and there are a unique mix of candidates. CTV Edmonton's Bill Fortier profiles the ward, the issues and the candidates.
