5 injured in 2-vehicle crash in southeast Edmonton
A crash involving an SUV and semi-trailer in southeast Edmonton on Monday injured five high-school students, authorities have confirmed.
Around 11:55 a.m., police say a southbound Dodge Journey on 76 Street and a semi performing a U-turn at 76 Street collided.
According to police, all five occupants inside the SUV were injured. One sustained life-threatening injuries, another had serious but non-life threatening injuries, and the other three occupants were assessed for non-life threatening injuries. Four of the teenage boys were 17 years old; one was 18.
An Edmonton Public Schools spokesperson confirmed they are all students from its division.
"The school where these students attend is bringing in additional support for those impacted by yesterday’s events. The school has activated the Division’s Critical Incident Support Services (CISS) team to come to the school and provide support to our staff and students. The team is made up of trained individuals who provide support and comfort in difficult times like this," Megan Normandeau wrote in a statement.
"Our thoughts are with these students and their families during this difficult time."
The driver of the semi did not report any injuries to police.
The speed of the Dodge Journey may have been a factor in the crash, the Edmonton Police Service said.
The intersection reopened around 7 p.m.
Correction
A previous version of this article said five youths were injured in the collision. EPS later clarified that only four youth were injured.
