RCMP say a 22-year-old man is facing charges following a collision in Red Deer that left two people dead early Sunday morning.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the collision which happened in south Red Deer at around 2 a.m. near the intersection of Ironstone Drive and 30th Avenue.

RCMP say a southbound GMC pickup truck hit an eastbound Chrysler Neon, severely impacting the drivers' side of the vehicle.

The 35-year-old female driver and 34-year-old male passenger were pronounced dead on scene.

Police say the two victims, who were from Red Deer, were related and were also both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision.

The 22-year-old driver of the pickup truck, from Sedalia, Alta., was treated in hospital and later released. Police arrested the man upon his release and is now in police custody. Charges are pending against the man.

The collision remains under investigation, but police say alcohol is a factor.

RCMP say this is the first traffic fatality in Red Deer since 2008.
