Residents of a downtown apartment building were evacuated early Wednesday morning after a blaze broke out in a basement suite.

The fire started around 4:30 a.m. in the area of 114 Street and 106 Avenue.

Thick smoke could be seen pouring out of the basement unit. Fire crews had a difficult time getting into the building and were forced to pry open a main door.

Residents told CTV News that the fire is the latest in a string of problems in the building.

"Probably had a party and got drunk or stoned or something and burnt the place down. Nothing but problems with people breaking down doors ...since I've lived there nothing but problems," said resident Gary Trudel.

No one was injured in the fire. The cause or damage estimates are not known at this time.
