The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said it was investigating a shooting involving Edmonton police that led to the death of a 30-year-old man Saturday.

ASIRT said EPS officers attempted a high-risk arrest of a man who was sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked on the east side of the Westmount shopping centre near Groat Road and 113 Avenue at about 8:15 p.m. Saturday.

Officials said the officers boxed the vehicle in, and yelled commands to the man.

The man attempted to escape.

ASIRT said officers fired tear gas into the vehicle, and the man confronted officers – ASIRT said officers discharged their weapons.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene – ASIRT said a loaded firearm was found in the vehicle and seized. Police also arrested two 18-year-old females who were in the vehicle as well. They were not injured.
