Grande Prairie RCMP have laid a number of charges against a man in his 50s, after officers were called to an early morning altercation that left a woman suffering from serious injuries.

RCMP and paramedics were called to a home in Clairmont, Alberta, at about 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers found an altercation had taken place between a man and a woman – who were known to each other.

As a result, a 48-year-old woman suffered serious injuries, and was taken to hospital in Grande Prairie where she was treated before being transferred to hospital in Edmonton.

Police said the extent of her injuries is not known.

Denis Wayne Rouleau, 52, of Clairmont is facing a number of charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

Rouleau made his first court appearance on Wednesday, and will remain in custody until his next court appearance, scheduled for Jan. 9.

Clairmont is located about 10 kilometres north of Grande Prairie.
