A newborn baby is in hospital after being thrown into a Calgary dumpster.

Police say a passerby found the baby in a garbage bin near a townhouse complex. Emergency crews were called after the passerby heard the infant crying.

"Another neighbour pulled in over here and he jumped into the garbage can. He peeled the bag open and he found a baby in there. He went to go get blankets. I pulled off my shirt, he went to go get blankets and then 911 told us to just wait until everyone was here," said James Patton who held the baby until paramedics arrived.

Calgary police spent the afternoon speaking to witnesses in the area. The baby was rushed to hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive. Investigators are now working to find the baby's mother.
