A Beaumont woman wants Canadians to sign a petition to strengthen penalties against drunk drivers who kill people.

Sheri Arsenault, the mother of Bradley Arsenault, the 18-year-old killed with two other friends in a 2011 collision, is working with conservative MP Michael Cooper to make sure drunk drivers who kill people face stiffer penalties.

Arsenault and Cooper believe Bill C-46, a proposed piece of legislation related about drunk-driving, is not rigid enough, and want the government to amend it to include a five-year mandatory sentence for impaired drivers who cause death.

Their proposed amendments were denied by the federal Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

“It’s just inconceivable how our current government treats drunk driving or impaired driving causing death as an accident,” Arsenault said.
