Officials with the Heartland Transmission Project are warning residents living in southeast and east Edmonton, and parts of Strathcona County that sounds similar to explosions in the area are part of efforts to construct the transmission line.

AltaLink and EPCOR officials said in a posting on their website, that starting in early October, shotgun-like sounds and small explosions would be seen in the area.

The explosions, called implosive connectors, are used to fuse portions of the transmission line wire together.

Each connection creates a flash, and a sound like a small explosion – which officials said could sound similar to a gunshot.

Three booming sounds are expected each day, only during typical working hours – and before each procedure, three horn blasts will serve as a warning.

The work started October 7, and is expected to continue into mid-November.
