Hours after Environment Canada issued a number of freezing rain warnings for regions in north and central Alberta, the weather swept through the city.

Environment Canada issued a number of freezing rain warnings early Saturday morning, the warnings indicated freezing rain is expected to develop Saturday afternoon.

Officials said a warm front should be moving into the province late in the afternoon, with freezing rain starting in the Peace country in the afternoon, before sweeping east towards the Edmonton area by the evening.

The freezing rain hit the city after 6 p.m. Saturday, and a short time later reports of a number of traffic issues throughout the city came out.

The City of Edmonton issued a warning to motorists to stay home if possible.

In addition, for a short time, ETS officials temporarily shut down bus service - the city said service was resumed later, but both bus and LRT service was delayed due to icy conditions.

The freezing rain was expected to move into the Lloydminster and Cold Lake areas by later Saturday night.
