City of Edmonton Officials are investigating, a day after a young boy died after being pulled from the pool at a northside recreation centre Tuesday afternoon.

The O’Leary Fitness and Leisure Centre pool was evacuated Tuesday, after a 7-year-old boy was pulled unconscious from the pool.

Officials said lifeguards at the pool started performing CPR, and when emergency crews arrived on the scene a short time later, they took over.

The boy was rushed to hospital, still unconscious.

On Wednesday, the city confirmed the boy had died.

Now, officials are reviewing what went wrong.

“The goal of the review is to whether we can take steps to improve the safety of our facilities,” City of Edmonton Manager of Community Recreation Facilities Rob Smyth said.

The city said at the time of the emergency, 82 people were in the pool and two lifeguards were on duty – which is within safety guidelines.

An investigation is also being done regarding another incident at Queen Elizabeth Pool on July 7.

Officials said a man in his 30s was found submerged in the pool – few details on the incident were released, as the case is under investigation.

Results of both investigations are not expected for several weeks – the city said each investigation can take up to eight weeks to complete.
