A memorial service will be held later this week for a murdered Spruce Grove teacher.

The body of a 36-year-old teacher and mother of two was found Oct. 13 at her home in Parkland County. Jolene Cote had been working at Greystone Centennial Middle School for the last three years.

A co-worker said that Cote was very passionate about her profession. Principal Caroyln Cameron said Cote took time to connect with her students.

"For me, the difference between a good teacher and an excellent teacher is a teacher that's able to reach those hard to reach kids, to make the time to help them see the potential that they have and Jolene did that with kids, those kids will remember her," she said, adding Cote first impressed her during the job interview.

"The most important thing that stands out for me and our colleagues and our students and the families, is her relationships and how she put herself into every situation, and every experience with people."

The service will be held this Friday at 11 a.m. in the West Meadows Baptist Church on 199 St.

Greystone Centennial will be shut down so students and staff can attend. Fellow teachers will be serving as honour guard during the service.

Police said they have no suspects and are still investigating.

An autopsy was conducted but the cause of death has not been released.

An assembly was held last week, to inform students of Cote's death. A critical incidence response team was also there to help students deal with the shocking news.

Messages have been posted on Facebook since news of Cote's death spread, messages of condolence coming from students, neighbours and relatives.
