An 18-year-old college student is dead and a 19-year-old college student was taken to hospital after being run over by a vehicle outside a bar near Olds, Alta.

Both victims are students of Olds College. RCMP say around midnight Friday, a 24-year-old Calgary man was asked by bar staff at Texas Mickey Bar to leave the premises.

It is alleged that he then got into a Ford F-250 pickup truck, drove through the parking lot, striking a group of pedestrians.

Police reveal there were approximately eight other witnesses in the parking lot at the time.

"I was in the pretty much the same line of the fire, it's just I jumped out of the way," said one witness who asked not to be named.

Investigators say the suspect fled the scene and was briefly chase by officers before he rolled his truck a few blocks away.

The 18-year-old died as a result of his injuries and the second student was taken to hospital, but has since been released.

No other injuries were reported. Old College identifies the victim as Nicolas Baier of Altario, Alta.

"Students are shocked. It's a really small town. It's a really great place to be for college. And you'd never hear about something like this happening," said Olds College Student Body President Brianna Maryon.

The 24-year-old suspect is currently in RCMP custody. It's alleged the man was kicked out of the bar because he was too intoxicated.

"I would say that his action was deliberate... we're not talking about a targeted group, we're talking about an act he chose," said Staff Sgt. Kevin Morton with Olds RCMP.

Police say charges are pending and could include counts under the murder section.
