Three community leagues are teaming up to rebuild a local mall.

Greenfield, Royal Gardens and Aspen Gardens community league held a design party for the Petrolia Mall on Saturday.

The mall is located on the corner of 114 Street and 40 Avenue.

Community representatives say the mall has become run down and is contributing to high crime rates in the area.

Residents were invited to bring ideas for the mall’s future.

Michael Walters said there was a need for seniors housing, grocery stores and a post office in the area.

“These are some of the things that make communities whole. And these are some of the most successful residential neighbourhoods in the city so retail will work here.”

The mall is changing ownership and the organizers plan to send their proposal to the new owners.
