The debate over the Great Divide Waterfall will be revisited by city councillors next week. It's been nearly three years since the waterfall was shut down due to tighter environmental standards, and it's possible it may never be turned on again.
Paying for the equipment to de-chlorinate the water feature could cost as much as $700,000, which is just one of the options in front of council.
The price tag for taking the chemicals out could drop to $175,000 but under that model, there would be a significant drop in water flow, which would change the appearance of the waterfall dramatically.
Keeping the waterfall open would also add an extra $40,000 a year to the city's budget because of the extra staff needed to oversee the de-chlorination equipment.
A decision on the issue needs to be made soon as the valves and other equipment at the waterfall need to be removed if council decides it doesn't want to spend the money.
