Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision that took place on Highway 43 Friday morning - and believe illicit drugs may have played a role in the collision.
Stony Plain RCMP said the crash occurred in the northbound lanes of Highway 43 near Onoway after 9 a.m.
Officers arrived on the scene to find two people inside one of the vehicles had died – bystanders tried to provide first aid – but police said they couldn’t be helped.
Police said a garbage truck was crossing the highway eastbound when it collided with the northbound minivan.
The truck driver wasn’t hurt.
The investigation is underway, and RCMP said speed didn’t appear to be a factor, but they are looking at the possibility of drug-impaired driving, they said marijuana was found inside one of the vehicles.
“It’s a significant quantity, it’s not just a joint or two and its part of our investigation,” Sgt. Ian Gillan said.
As a result of the crash, police were on the scene for several hours - police said the highway re-opened at 2 p.m. Friday.
