One Edmonton boy’s passion is helping a family in Ohio.

Ten-year-old Charlie Dutton has organized a piano concert to help out Freddy, a Greyhound dog that was injured in January.

The dog is being cared for by Greyhound Rescue Rehab (GRR).

A family has stepped up to adopt Freddy but the organization wants to make sure they don’t get strapped with the vet bill.

That’s where Charlie thought he could help – by combining his love of piano with his passion for Greyhounds.

“My teacher said I could do a passion project for extra work at school,” he explained.

“I made it a little bigger than he expected.”

A Greyhound owner himself, Charlie thought he’d like to help organizations dedicated to the breed.

The Edmonton organization that helped Charlie connect to GRR said they have seen fundraisers by youth before but nothing like this.

“This is the first one that has really been on this scale,” Debbie Ward, from Chinook Winds said.

The event has filled up fast with 156 people signed up to attend, Charlie’s mom, Brianna said.

“His goal was to raise $800 but I think we’re going to get over that,” she smiled.

Brianna said she has long been impressed with Charlie’s good nature.

“He always had some kind of idea of how he was going to help the world.

“If we’re doing this at 10 what’s going to happen at 20?”

Ward also said that the whole event brought tears to her eyes.

“In one of those twists that we never could have planned, Freddy is actually going into his forever home and being adopted on the day of Charlie’s concert.”

Charlie’s concert will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Rio Terrace Moravian Church.
