A 21-year-old man who was found guilty in the second-degree murder of his mother was handed a life sentence Thursday, with no possibility of applying for parole for 12 years.

Earlier this year after more than 20 hours of deliberation, a jury found that Keshroy Bristol strangled his 49-year-old mother, Beverly Parker three years ago, leaving her face down on the sidewalk of her Mill Woods home.

According to the Crown, Parker wanted to adopt Bristol's 10-month-old daughter, and arguments related to that matter served as motive for the murder.

The verdict came after a first trial in 2009 ended with a hung jury. Bristol also received a lifetime weapons prohibition.
