Edmonton police confirmed Monday night that an officer-involved shooting had taken place in the city’s west end – and one officer was dead. Police identified him as Const. Daniel Woodall.
Police said Monday night that officers were investigating an officer-involved shooting at 184 Street and Callingwood Road – and asked residents to avoid the immediate area.
At least one officer was sent to hospital due to the incident – sources later said that one officer had died as a result of the shooting.
EPS Chief Rod Knecht said officers were responding to a Hate Crimes-related call, executing an arrest warrant on harassment charges in the area at about 8 p.m., and were trying to enter the home when shots were fired from inside.
Two officers were wounded, Knecht said Sgt. Jason Harley was injured but was expected to survive; Const. Daniel Woodall was also hit by gunfire, but succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Witnesses told CTV News at the scene that gunshots were heard ringing out in the area Monday evening – followed by a quick police response.
“I was at home in my living room, I heard like five bangs go off, and I thought nothing of it,” Angela Wall said.
“It’s usually pretty quiet, so pretty intense to see all this going on.”
Knecht also said the house in question was on fire, and said he believed it burned to the ground – he also said after midnight that residents were not in danger, but did not confirm whether a suspect was in custody.
Knecht said Woodall moved to Edmonton from Great Britain, he had previously worked with the Greater Manchester Police.
The EPS Chief said Woodall, 35, is survived by his wife, and two children – and said his thoughts were with the family.
“Of far greater importance, a wife is without a husband, and two young children are without a loving father.”
