It has been one year since the death of four teens in Grande Prairie and the families say they it hasn’t been easy but they are getting back to living after their loss.

Walter Borden-Wilkens, Matt Deller, Tanner Hildebrand and Vincent Stover were killed when a pickup truck hit the vehicle they were in on October 22, 2011. Fellow passenger, Zach Judd survived the collision.

The stepfather of Walter Borden-Wilkins told CTV Edmonton it had been a tough year.

“For a while there we were both kind of falling apart,” Darren Davidson said.

“We were having a lot of difficulties functioning as a family.”

Davidson said the last few months the family has been rebuilding their lives.

“We’ve pretty much done what we need to do to carry on with our lives and make our lives better,” he said adding Borden-Wilkins’ siblings have been busy with school activities and their mother, Holly, has started working.

“She’s loving her job. She’s still having her breakdowns now and then but it’s not near as frequently as before she started working,” Davidson said.

He also said he has turned his life around and taken a new path.

“Now I’m going into teaching people life skills because I turned my bottom around. My life now is better than it’s ever been.

“I want to help people turn their lives around and make their lives better.”

The families of the teens gathered with the community on Saturday night for a vigil to remember the boys.

“None of us in the families wanted it to be a big deal,” Davidson said.

“What we were interested in doing is a year after the crash, honour the boys, have a moment of silence, remember then and love them.

“We were happy with what we did,” he said, adding his family would be marking the actual date privately.

“We miss Walter every day, like we have all year.

“We’re going to miss Walter the whole rest of our lives,”

Twenty-one year old Brendan Holubowich has been charged in the case and will appear in a Grande Prairie courtroom November 5.

He faces 16 charges including impaired driving causing death and failure to remain at the scene of a crash.
