The funeral for the young man who was struck and killed by a train earlier in the week was held in Leduc Friday.

Family and friends packed the Family Worship Centre in Leduc Friday afternoon to bid a final farewell to 19-year-old Daniel McPherson.

McPherson was walking along some train tracks near Leduc Monday afternoon, when he was struck and killed by a Canadian Pacific train.

In an interview with CTV News McPherson's grandparents spoke about the incident that took the life of their grandchild.

Chris and Dianne Maneschyn said they are deeply devastated by the loss of Daniel.

"To see somebody who was so full of life to be gone like that, it's wrong," Said Dianne. "We're devastated, we don't blame the conductor by any means at all."

The Maneschys's said their grandson loved of listening to music and that likely led to the accident.

RCMP reported the conductor of the train blew the horn, and attempted to stop but McPherson was unable to hear the warning due to the headphones he was wearing.

The Maneshyn's said they often told their grandson not to wear his headphones when near the tracks. But they say their grandson always told them he would be fine.

"Even walking on the sidewalk where he's supposed to be walking, he shouldn't have his earphones blasting so [he] can't still hear traffic," Daniel's grandfather lamented.

"A lot of people do what Daniel did, unfortunately he paid the price," Said Dianne. "Now he's never going to get married, never have babies, he's not going to get a job, or go travelling, which he loved,

"All that is gone now for one silly mistake."

The family hopes the accident doesn't fade from people's minds, and that it can serve as a reminder for pedestrians to pay attention to their surroundings.

The grandmother issued a warning to other teenagers who enjoy listening to music while walking outside.

"Don't have them on so loud or have only one on, but be aware of what's around you because it can change in a split second."
