EDMONTON -

Two people were killed in a collision between a car and an SUV on a rural road east of Beaumont, Alta., Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. on Township Road 505 between Range Roads 235 and 240.

The area was completely closed to traffic for several hours.

The 45-year-old Leduc County, Alta., woman, who was driving the car, was taken to hospital by ambulance, where she died, RCMP said.

Her passenger, a 21-year-old Beaumont man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 39-year-old Beaumont woman, who was driving the SUV, was treated by paramedics at the scene before being released.

She was the lone occupant of the SUV.

Mounties say the driver of the SUV turned westbound onto Township Road 505 when the car was travelling east. Police believe the car lost control before the crash occurred.

A traffic analyst was on scene taking photos and measurements. A black SUV was on the road with heavy front-end damage, while another vehicle could be seen destroyed in the ditch nearby.

Victims services workers were at the crash site.
