A 60-year-old Athabasca man is dead after a two-vehicle collision near Nestow, a hamlet located 80 kilometres north of Edmonton.

Westlock RCMP say the crash happened on Saturday, 12 kilometres north of the intersection connecting hwy. 2 and hwy. 18.

It's believed the victim lost control while driving northbound and slid into an on-coming SUV. He was alone in the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the southbound vehicle, identified as a 38-year-old man from Morinville, was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, as were his wife and kids, aged 10 and 12.

RCMP believe driving too fast for the road conditions played a role in the crash; it had snowed earlier in the day, causing the road to be wet and slippery in certain sections.

No charges are being considered in the incident.
