It's been a busy week for Edmonton homicide detectives. They are now investigating their third murder this week alone.

Police were called to the Stadium LRT station, located near 112 Ave. and 85 St., around 10:20 pm Friday night for reports of a gunshot.

When they arrived, they found a 23-year old woman lying face down; the victim of a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the woman may have gotten into a brief argument with a young man before he shot her. The suspect may have used a sawed-off shotgun.

He was seen fleeing from the scene on foot. The canine search team did pick up a scent but no arrests have been made.

"[The suspect] is described as a young male wearing dark clothing, red baseball cap and carrying a red back pack," said Act. Const. Ken Hykawy. "That is all the information we have right now."

The suspect has also been described as:

• Possibly aboriginal

• Between the ages of 16- 21 years old

• Roughly 5'10"

• Approximately 160 lbs.

Surveillance footage from the LRT station's security cameras have been seized as evidence. Police say up to half dozen witnesses are being interviewed.

This was also the second violent incident at a transit station in the past 24 hours. On Saturday afternoon, police were called to the Kingsway bus station responding to a stabbing.

LRT riders CTV spoke with say riding public transportation at night can be quite scary.

"I am frightened," said June Martire. "Yet I know a lot of these things that are happening are often between people who know each other."

"It does scare me as sometimes and I would like to take the LRT home when say my mom can't pick me up," said Kathy Le, a grade 12 student. "Just the fact that stabbings and shootings are happening, it makes me scared to take it."

One City councillor says the City and transit security are doing everything they can to quell the violence.

"We now have cameras in all our LRT stations, we have a lot more transit security officers," said Kim Krushell, Councillor. "I mean we have put a lot of resources into making our transit system safe, yet we are still seeing incidents."

The victim has been identified but police are withholding the release of her name until the next of kin has been notified.

An autopsy has yet to be scheduled.

This is Edmonton's seventh homicide of the year.
