A fire in central Edmonton that prompted the precautionary evacuation of an apartment building next door was caused by people, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services says.

The Dec. 30 fire in a shuttered building at 10731 102 Street "originated in a second-floor bedroom and case as a result of human involvement," EFRS said in a statement on Thursday.

"Multiple ignition sources could not be ruled out as potentially contributing to the ignition of the fire."

The fire caused about $1.2 million in damages.
