An apartment building in central Edmonton was evacuated Monday morning because of a next-door fire.

Although the blaze was reported at 5 a.m., flames were still visible at 10731 102 St. when CTV News Edmonton arrived at the scene around 6 a.m.

The fire wasn't extinguished until 9:30 a.m.

One person was taken to hopsital, according to an Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokesperson, who did not say how the person was injured.

The neighbouring building was evacuated as a precaution. A city bus was brought in to keep evacuees warm. They were allowed back into their homes by mid-morning.

One of the next-door residents said the building had been boarded up for a few months.

Alberta Health Services ruled it was not fit for human habitation in August because of a fire.
