Edmonton police have laid a number of charges against five people, after shots rang out in a northeast Edmonton neighbourhood just after midnight.

Officers were called to the area of 29 Street and 116 A Avenue around 12:30 a.m., after witnesses reported hearing gunfire in the neighbourhood.

It was reported that a white vehicle was seen fleeing the area.

However, police managed to track down and stop that vehicle a short time later.

“Inside that vehicle we detained five males – a search of that vehicle we recovered two handguns,” EPS Insp. Brian Nowlan said at the scene.

By late Monday afternoon, police identified the five accused: Abdullahi Shire Khalif, 26, Mohamed Shire Khalif, 27, Shuaib Abdirahman Mohamed, 20, Abdullahi Nursed, 22, and Mahamed Sahal, 24.

Each is facing two counts each of possession of a dangerous weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a vehicle, and careless use of a firearm – but Abdullahi Shire Khalif is also facing three counts of breach of recognizance.

“We have about six separate suspects, and about a dozen witnesses to go through so we are just at the infancy stage of our investigation,” Insp. Nowlan said.

Police said later Monday that investigators were still gathering evidence and interviewing a number of witnesses.

It’s not clear if anyone was injured.
