The shortage has caused some gas stations—including one in Edmonton— to run dry.

As well, there was a big jump at most stations around Edmonton. Gas shot up to just above the $106.9 mark Friday morning.

Petro Canada spokesperson, Sneh Seetal, told CTV Edmonton there will be a temporary shortage of supply, including the station here in the city on 106 Street and 51 Avenue. She said the shortage was “unavoidable”, caused due to an unplanned outage at the Edmonton refinery, seasonally planned maintenance and the wildfire’s impact on supply for the refinery.

Seetal said they are working to fix the problem.

“We are bringing in additional gasoline from within our own network and also from third parties,” said Seetal. “We know fuel is important [to our customers] and that’s why we’re doing everything we can to the best of our ability to continue serving them.”

There is no timeline on when exactly that will happen—or how long the shortage will last.

Suncor officials are also working to ensure the supply is maintained in more critical locations, such as areas where there are limited or no other options for fuel.

Fort McMurray has been designated as one of those critical location, in order to support those returning home.
