EDMONTON -- Edmonton firefighters were called to put out a massive, flaming pile of garbage Tuesday morning.

According to officials on scene, crews were called around 3:40 a.m. to GFL Environmental's west-end complex.

They were able to prevent the blaze from spreading from the garbage pile where it originated, despite the challenge presented by the wind, which caused heavy smoke to drift north over Anthony Henday Drive and into the Starling and Trumpeter areas.

The fire at the Edmonton-Winterburn Transfer Station was under control at 5:33 a.m. and fully out just after 9 a.m.

No one was hurt.

The waste management company also operates in east Edmonton.
