A stretch of highway northeast of Edmonton that was the scene of a fatal collision Wednesday is closed again Thursday morning, after two separate collisions.

RCMP tell CTV News two collisions occurred Thursday morning on Highway 881 south of Conklin, Alta.

Cst. Chris Clark says the first collision occurred around 4 a.m., when a semi went into a ditch at kilometre marker 130, approximately 50 kilometres south of Conklin.

There were no injuries reported in that collision.

Clark says a second collision occurred around 10:30 a.m. at kilometre marker 158, approximately 20 kilometres south of Conklin.

He said that collision involved a pick-up truck and a second pick-up truck carrying a trailer and there were minor injuries reported.

Both crashes have forced highway closures in the area.

Clark expects the routes to be cleared up in a few hours.

By 1 p.m. the highway was still closed at both locations.

RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the collisions and say road conditions and driver behaviour are factors.

Clark is reminding motorists to slow down, be cautious, and remember posted speed limits are only for ideal road conditions.

Fatal collision on Highway 881 Wednesday

The two morning crashes comes after a 54-year-old man died in a fatal collision on Highway 881 Wednesday afternoon.

RCMP were called to that collision just before 3 p.m. on Highway 881 at kilometre marker 135, 45 kilometres south of Conklin.

One of the drivers of the vehicles involved, 54-year-old Ronald Foster, of Gibbons, died at the scene.

Two other men, a 24-year-old passenger in the same vehicle as Foster and a 39-year-old driver of another vehicle, were airlifted to hospital in Edmonton in critical condition.

The highway was closed for several hours and police continue to investigate in that case.

RCMP say highways in and around Lac La Biche County are covered in snow and have accumulated ice, and are reminding motorists to drive safely.

Several highway travel advisories have been issued by Lac La Biche RCMP in recent weeks.

Conklin, Alta. is located about 367 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
