Two sisters are in hospital after their family's vehicle was hit by a semi.

The crash happened south of Spruce Grove just before 5:00pm, Tuesday.

Police at the scene said that it appears the Sunfire, being driven by the girl's father, was heading southbound on Golden Spike Road when it was hit by an eastbound semi at Highway 627.

"At this point we have a 15 year old female and a 2 year old female that were taken to hospital," said RCMP CST. Douglas Lee. "The 15 year old was taken by STARS and the 2 year old by ground ambulance."

Officials with STARS Air Ambulance say the teen was stable while en route to hospital. There's no word yet on the toddler's condition.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
