Homicide detectives are investigating after an early morning fight in Mill Woods left one man dead.

Police say a disturbance was reported at a home in the area of Mill Woods Road and 16A Avenue just before 5 a.m. Monday.

“There were a number of individuals in this complex who were yelling and fighting,”said Insp. Dean Hilton.

When officers arrived, they found a 22-year-old man suffering from injuries related to an alleged altercation.

Police say the man was taken to hospital where he died.

Police are not publicly identifying the victim and won't comment on his injuries, however friends and family have identified the man as 22-year-old Mike Motiuk.

Witnesses tell CTV News they believe Motiuk had been stabbed by a machete, which was collected at the scene by police Monday morning.

They say a second person was also injured and the pair had been at a house party in a townhouse complex in the area.

"There was a house party going on and then there were two kids that were attacked. They were moving to another house party and they were attacked outside,” Randie Breuns, a friend of Motiuk, told CTV News.

"It's really sad. Mike was a really good kid. I'm not sure why things had to get like this."

A number of people were seen handcuffed and taken into police cars around noon on Monday. Police say they were witnesses and will be interviewed.

"They all agreed to go down and be interviewed so we can try to determine what happened this morning," Hilton said.

Officers say they do not have suspects at this time. An autopsy will be performed in the next day or two.

Meanwhile a Facebook group has been launched in honour of Motiuk where people who knew him are sharing memories of the young man.

If the suspicious death is confirmed to be a homicide, it would be Edmonton's 17th homicide of the year.
