Police have been investigating a death in Edmonton's north end.

Homicide detectives were called in after a man's body was found early Sunday morning.

Police said a resident reported an injured man lying in an alley around 134 Avenue and 101 Street.

The 22-year-old victim was declared dead at the scene.

"We are treating the matter as a suspicious death," Insp. Mark Neufeld said.

He also said they have identified the victim but won't release details until the man's next of kin have been contacted.

"Until we have notified next of kin we won't be discussing where he is from."

Although police haven't said what killed the man reports indicated it was a head wound.

Neighbour Cindy Mah said she heard a popping sound around 11 p.m. on Saturday.

"I didn't really think anything of it until this morning," she told CTV News. "Then I thought it was a gunshot."

However, Neufeld said police have not confirmed whether the man had been killed in the area or whether the body was dumped in the alley.

"We don't know how that individual came to be in that lane although we're very interested in that.

"Anytime somebody is found deceased in a lane like that there are difficult questions that have to be asked and answered," he added.

Mah said the incident had alarmed her.

"I always thought this area was pretty safe," she explained.

"To find out something like this happened, it's really scary."

An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Edmonton police have asked anyone with information to call them, 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
