Numerous charges have been laid against an Edmonton couple related to the alleged abuse of their twin toddlers, although both children remain in hospital – the Homicide Section is investigating.

Police said paramedics were called to the couple's home on Friday, May 25 – EMS arrived on scene to find one of the two-year-old girls in cardiac arrest, and the other suffering from numerous injuries.

Paramedics managed to successfully revive the one girl, who had suffered a life-threatening head injury – before rushing both children to hospital.

The child suffering from a head injury is still on life support, sources told CTV News her prognosis is not good.

Investigators said physicians assessed both girls, who were found to be severely malnourished – one weighed nearly 6 kilograms (13 lbs.) and her sister weighed just over 7 kilograms (16 lbs.).

As a result, the Edmonton Police Service's Child at Risk Response Team was contacted.

On Tuesday, following consultation with the Crown, police arrested and charged both parents with two counts each of the following:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm
  • Failing to provide the necessities of life

The names of the accused cannot be released to protect the identities of the children.

Police said a third child, a young boy, was found in the home – and is now in foster care.

Due to life threatening injuries sustained by one of the twins, homicide investigators are working on the file.

The couple appeared in court Wednesday; their next court appearance has been scheduled for next week.

Both are in custody, and are not allowed to communicate with each other or their children.
