Officials with the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission said Tuesday that hundreds of kilograms of contraband products including shisha tobacco, contraband cigarettes and flavoured cigars had been seized.

Officials with the AGLC said more than 306 kilograms of contraband products were found when investigators carried out a search warrant at Alex’s Convenience Store in Edmonton.

As a result, Hiwot Atnafu and Alemayehu (Alex) Girma are facing a number of charges including fraud over $5,000, trafficking in contraband tobacco and possession of more than 1,000 grams of tobacco.

It’s estimated the total potential lost tax revenue for the contraband products is more than $116,000.

The two accused are scheduled to appear in an Edmonton courtroom on March 16.
