The lawyer for one of two youths accused in a gruesome assault on a 12-year-old boy in Calmar last October said his client was not in the area at the time of the incident.

In a Leduc courtroom Friday morning, a lawyer for one of the accused said his client was not in the town of Calmar at the time of the alleged incident in October.

He said he plans to present as many as half a dozen people to back up the claim.

The case stems from charges laid after a 12-year-old boy showed up at a gas station in Calmar just before 1 a.m. on October 30 – witnesses said the boy was severely injured, and was bruised and bleeding.

He was taken to the Stollery Children's Hospital immediately for treatment.

Two weeks later, two youths were charged with assault causing bodily harm, sexual assault, forcible confinement and administering a noxious substance.

The mother of the victim told CTV News back in November the people responsible for the crime lured her son to an apartment, and forced him to drink alcohol – before burning, punching and cutting him repeatedly, and sexually abusing him.

The next appearance for the two accused youths has been scheduled for February 10.
