RCMP said a man in his 20s has died, after the truck he was driving crashed on the highway Thursday evening.

Police said the collision happened just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday, on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway on the Black Gold overpass, south of 50 Avenue in Leduc.

According to RCMP, witnesses said the truck was travelling south on the highway when it struck the guardrail and became airborne – before hitting a large pole and going over an embankment.

The 26-year-old Leduc man who was behind the wheel, and was the only person inside the vehicle – succumbed to his injuries on the scene before paramedics could airlift him to hospital.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, and the name of the driver has not been released pending notification of next-of-kin.

RCMP are investigating the collision.
