Health Minister Ron Liepert is expected to recommend to Tory MLAs this week that the government should reduce the number of health boards in Alberta from nine to one, CTV News has learned.

The proposal comes about one month after Liepert unveiled his plans for reforming Alberta's health care system, where he repeatedly stated that, "everything is on the table."

Alberta currently has nine health boards in the province, including Edmonton's Capital Health region.

The boards are responsible for administering and delivering health care in their specific regions.

Liepert previously said accessibility is a key concern and something must change to give Albertans better access to health care.

Sources told CTV News that Liepert's proposal to reduce the number of boards received a good reception at cabinet Tuesday.

He is expected to take it to the full Tory caucus on Thursday.

If the plan is implemented, some sources said the "superboard" will include a mechanism to allow local health care officials to have input in how the service is delivered while it is run from one centre either in Calgary or Edmonton.
